Tiger becomes youngest to take 50 PGA titles Tuesday, August 8 2006 15:18 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Grand Blanc (Michigan):
World number one Tiger Woods became the youngest player to win 50 US PGA Tour titles, firing his fourth six-under par 66 in a row here Sunday to win the Buick Open by three strokes.
At age 30, Woods eclipsed the mark set by his boyhood idol, Jack Nicklaus, who was 33 when he captured his 50th career crown.
Woods won the British Open two weeks ago for his 11th major crown, seven shy of matching Nicklaus for the all-time major title total.
Woods finished on 24-under par 264 to defeat fellow American Jim Furyk by three strokes. Furyk closed with a 64 to edge Joe Durant by a stroke with Scott Verplank, Vaughn Taylor and Sean O'Hair completing an all-US list on 269.
Woods birdied three holes in a row starting at the par-3 third and added another at the seventh to make the turn four-under.
He gave back a bogey at the par-4 12th but answered with a birdie at the par-5 13th and finished with birdies and 15 and 18 to stretch the final victory margin.
