Jones in hot water over 'terrorist' comment
Tuesday, August 8 2006 14:24 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Johannesburg: Former Australian test cricketer Dean Jones is in hot water after he allegedly called South African Muslim cricketer Hashim Amla a 'terrorist' while commentating on air, cricket officials said Monday.

Cricket South Africa chief executive Gerald Majola said an official complaint is to be laid with Jones' broadcaster Ten Sports, who was showing the Test match between South Africa and Sri Lanka live when the comment was made.

Jones allegedly said ,"The terrorist has got another wicket" when Proteas fielder Amla caught Kumar Sangakkara during the fourth day of the second Test in Colombo on Monday. "

"We take the strongest exception to this comment and will lodge an official complaint with the host broadcaster, Ten Sports, that employs him," Majola said in a statement issued in Johannesburg.

"We will be asking for his immediate suspension and a full apology," he said.

"The switchboards of both Cricket SA and SuperSport, that takes a feed of the broadcast to South African audiences have been jammed with calls from some very angry people," Majola said.

Amla is one of the only Muslim players in the Protea squad and sports a full beard.

"This kind of racial stereotyping has no place in cricket and must be stamped on swiftly," Majola said.

He added the matter will also be reported to governing body the International Cricket Council.
