McGrath named in 30-man preliminary squad

Melbourne: Australian speedster Glenn McGrath is today (7 Aug, 2006) named in the country's 30-man preliminary squad for the October-November ICC Champions Trophy but his trip to India is still not certain.

A Cricket Australia (CA) spokesman said discussions between national selectors and the pace bowling great are continuing about whether he will play in the one-day tournament or turn out for Pura Cup matches as he prepares for the Ashes series. "It is a work in progress, the selectors and Glenn continue to talk about the most appropriate time and place for his return to cricket," the CA spokesman, said.

McGrath, 36, skipped the tours of South Africa and Bangladesh earlier this year after his wife Jane suffered a recurrence of cancer.

The national squad will be trimmed to a final squad of 14 on September 7.

Australia's preliminary squad: Ricky Ponting (captain), Adam Gilchrist (vice-captain), Travis Birt, Doug Bollinger, Nathan Bracken, Stuart Clark, Michael Clarke, Mark Cosgrove, Dan Cullen, Brett Dorey, Brad Haddin, Matthew Hayden, Ben Hilfenhaus, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, James Hopes, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Phil Jaques, Mitchell Johnson, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Mick Lewis, Glenn McGrath, Shaun Marsh, Damien Martyn, Andrew Symonds, Shaun Tait, Shane Watson, Cameron White.
