Doyle edges Watson to defend US Senior Open Tuesday, July 11 2006 15:27 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Hutchinson:
Allen Doyle fired a two-under par 68 here Sunday to win his second US Senior Open golf crown in a row, defeating fellow American Tom Watson by two strokes.
Doyle became the first repeat winner of the event since South African legend Gary Player in 1988, finishing 72 holes on eight-under par 272 to capture the 470,000-dollar top prize by two strokes over Watson, who fired a closing 72.
Doyle fired a final-round 63 last year to win by a stroke and rallied this time to deny Watson, who was also the US Senior Open runner-up in 2002 and 2003. Peter Jacobsen and Bruce Lietzke shared third, another stroke behind.
Four rounds in the 60s made Doyle only the third man to achieve that feat in the event, matching 1995 winner Tom Weiskopf and Player from his 1987 victory.
Doyle birdied two of the first three holes, slid back to level par for the round at the turn, then birdied 12 and 14 and answered a bogey at 16 with a birdie at the next hole.
