Paes wins, other disappointed at Wimbledon
Tuesday, July 4 2006 14:37 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

London: Leander Paes was the only bright spot for India on Day seven at Wimbledon, winning both his men's doubles and mixed doubles matches even as his compatriots in action fell by the wayside.

The seventh seeded team of Paes and Czech Martin Damm defeated Cyril Suk and Robin Vik of the Czech Republic 6-2 6-1 7-6 (7/1) in a third round match.

The Indian Davis Cup star had a gruelling schedule yesterday as he also paired up with Australian Samantha Stosur to defeat Paul Hanley and Tatiana Perebiynis in a close second round mixed doubles encounter.

The fourth seeded combination finally prevailed over the Aussie-Ukrainian duo 4-6 6-3 12-10.

But it was bad news for India elsewhere at the All England Lawn Tennis Club as 11th seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and his Chinese partner Zi Yan went down to the star American pairing of Bob Bryan and Venus Williams 6-4 6-1 in the second round of mixed doubles.

Sania Mirza also bowed out of the women's doubles after she and Dutch girl Michaella Krajicek lost to Russia's Elena Dementieva and Flavia Pennetta of Italy in the second round.

The eighth seeded pair carved out a 6-4 6-2 win. Dementieva had also defeated Sania in the first round of the women's singles.

In the boys' singles, 14th seed Jeevan Neduncheziya fell to local lad Ed Corrie 6-0 6-7 (4/7) 6-1 while Slovakia's Andrei Martin defeated Rupesh Roy 6-2 7-5.

In the Over-45 men's doubles, Vijay and Anand Amritraj went down to Iran's Mansour Bahrami and American Gene Mayer 6-2 7-6 (/5).
