Luke Donald demands sterner Wentworth test
Friday, May 26 2006 15:50 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

London: Luke Donald grabbed a share of the first round lead at the BMW Championship at Wentworth on Thursday and then wished the course was a little tougher. Donald, compatriots Paul Casey and Nick Dougherty as well as South Africa's Andrew McLardy all fired five-under par first rounds of 67 to go top of the leaderboard.

But Donald wants the famous West Course to be made harder for the remaining 54 holes of the event.

Days of rain here meant that two tees had to be moved forward negating earlier changes to the layout which had seen 30 bunkers added since Ernie Els's win last year.

"The European Tour were cautious in the way they set up the course," said Donald.

"I think people on the whole were excited by the changes and a few times it negated that by putting the tees up. It really didn't seem to play too difficult," he said.

"I was thinking coming down the 18th that when I do play in Europe the courses generally are a little more generous off the tee, the rough isn't quite as thick and they don't tuck the pins quite as much as they do on the US tour," he said.

Dougherty carded two birdies on the final two holes as he looks to hang on to his 10th and last automatic place in the race for a Ryder Cup place.

Donald is fifth and Casey eighth in the race for a place in Ian Woosnam's European team. Defending champion Els is two shots off the pace.

"It was a good test but if you played properly today, you'd shoot under par," said the South African," he said.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie, who has missed seven of his last nine cuts, struggled once more, carding a one-over 73.
