Juventus retains Series A title on final day Monday, May 15 2006 14:10 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Rome:
Juventus retained the Series A title on Sunday after a 2-0 away win at Reggina on the last day of a season which ended mired in match-fixing allegations.
French striker David Trezeguet put Juve ahead with a close-range header in the 23rd minute, before a late solo effort from Alessandro Del Piero wrapped up the victory.
The Turin club ended up with 91 points from their 38 matches played, three ahead of AC Milan who beat Roma 2-1.
Juve's 29th Scudetto, however, has been tainted by their suspected involvement in match-fixing and alleged collusion with referees last season.
Juventus ended their ban on talking to the media with coach Fabio Capello insisting the ongoing scandal took nothing away from the club's achievement.
"I've worked with this group of players for two years and we always go out there to do our best and we've done that," he told SKY Italia.
"Since I've been here we've spent 76 games at the top of Serie A and we end the season with our heads held high.
"We have been condemned already without any proof. Let's wait for the outcome."
Capello moved to quash press speculation that he could leave Juve to coach Inter Milan.
"I have a contract here and I'm happy to stay," he said.
On Friday the entire Juventus board resigned in the aftermath of the scandal that has rocked the foundations of Italian football.
The title could yet be taken away from Juventus if they are found directly responsible for rigging matches. Another consequence could see them relegated.
Should that happen, they stand to lose an estimated 300 million euros (387 million dollars) in television rights and sponsorship.
Milan are also being investigated by a Naples prosecutor for alleged match-fixing, along with Fiorentina and Lazio.
The other remaining issue decided on the final day was fourth place, with Fiorentina pipping Roma to the final Champions League spot thanks to their 2-0 win at Chievo.
Roma can take some consolation from a place in the UEFA Cup.
Reggina were forced to play the match at Bari's San Nicola stadium after they were hit with a one-match stadium ban for crowd trouble.
Despite suffering from an ankle injury, Gianluigi Buffon, who in a separate investigation is suspected of illegal gambling on Serie A matches, started in goal.
Juventus survived two scares before Trezeguet calmed their nerves.
Pavel Nedved's corner took a wicked deflection and Reggina goalkeeper Ivan Pelizzoli succeeded only in palming the ball up in the air.
Trezeguet reacted quickly, launching himself off the ground to head the loose ball into the net for his 23rd goal of the season.
Del Piero ensured the win with a right-footed shot in injury time after a robust run.
Andriy Shevchenko fuelled speculation that he has played his last game for Milan after he turned up in the San Siro stands alongside the home fans.
The 29-year-old Ukraine international, currently sidelined with a knee injury, cut an emotional figure as he was swamped by adoring supporters.
Shevchenko is expected to leave after seven seasons at Milan, with English champions Chelsea reported to be the favorites to sign him.
Milan were ahead after just five minutes.
Leandro Cufre was judged to have pulled down Alberto Gilardino in the box, and Brazilian midfielder Kaka buried the resulting penalty past Alexander Doni.
Roma equalised in the 33rd minute when Cesare Bovo delivered a free-kick into the box and Philippe Mexes stole in behind Gilardino to head past Nelson Dida.
Milan sneaked victory in the final minute when Bovo brought down Gilardino, earning him a red card, and Brazilian Amoroso drilled home the penalty.
Luca Toni ended up as Series A's top scorer after scoring his 31st goal of the season in Fiorentina's victory at Chievo.
Dario Dainelli's late header made the points safe for Fiorentina.
Relegation had already been decided with Treviso, Lecce and Messina dropping down from Italy's top division.
