Brett Wetterich wins Championship for PGA Monday, May 15 2006 14:28 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Irving:
Brett Wetterich seized his first career PGA Tour victory here Sunday, firing a final-round 68 for a one-shot win in the $5.8 million Byron Nelson Championship. Wetterich finished with a 12-under total of 268, one stroke in front of South African Trevor Immelman.
Wetterich opened with a birdie and added another at the seventh after back-to-back bogeys at four and five. He ended the front nine with a bogey but started his home stretch with a birdie to pull within a shot of the lead, held by Immelman at the time.
Birdies at 13 and 16 combined with a bogey by Immelman at 15 gave Wetterich the lead, which he preserved to earn 1.116 million dollars.
On the 18th tee, Wetterich led by a shot and hit his drive comfortably in the fairway.
Immelman, who bogeyed 18 last week at Wachovia and eventually lost to Jim Furyk in a playoff slightly pulled his drive and the ball took a hard bounce left into the water.
Immelman took a drop, hit a solid approach to 12 feet and drained his putt for par to card an even-par 70 and preserve second place at 11-under 269.
Wetterich fired his approach on the final hole to about 18 feet and tapped in for par to close out his breakthrough victory and become the fifth first-time winner on tour this season.
Omar Uresti (68) and Australian Adam Scott (71) finished tied for third at 10-under.
Scott, who entered Sunday tied with Immelman for the lead, stumbled with three consecutive bogeys from the eighth to drop to 8-under.
He birdied two of his final three holes but it was not enough to overtake Wetterich.
