Cabrera to join elite club at BMW Championship Tuesday, April 25 2006 11:50 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Wentworth (England):
Argentinas Angel Cabrera is aiming to join an elite club of champions when he attempts to add next month's BMW Championship to the one he won here last year.
Only England's Nick Faldo and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie have earned back-to-back titles with Faldo claiming victory in 1980 and 1981 while Montgomerie became the first player to win in three successive years between 1998 and 2000.
Now Cabrera, who earned a two-stroke victory over Irelands Paul McGinley over the west course at Wentworth last year, is looking to break into that elite club after the May 25 to 28 event.
The 36-year-old from Cordoba enjoyed his best finish to date in the US Masters earlier this month when he closed with a brilliant 68 for a share of eighth place, securing an automatic return to Augusta in 2007.
Now he has fixed his sights on retaining his title over a Wentworth course he clearly adores. He said: "I was second twice in four years before finally winning last year.
"That victory, and my win in the Benson and Hedges International Open at The Belfry in 2002, remain the highlights of my career so far, but I would love to join Nick and Monty and successfully defend my title at Wentworth.
"It is a beautiful golf course - one of my favourites in the world - and I also came close to winning the World Match Play there last year before Paul (McGinley) beat me in the semi-finals."
