Few changes likely in squad: Selection committee Wednesday, April 19 2006 19:45 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
The national senior selection committee is unlikely to make many changes in the Indian one-day squad for the tour of the West Indies when they meet here tomorrow (Apr 20, 2006).
The superb run of the team under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid since the series against Sri Lanka won by India 6-1 has led to this happy situation for the selectors who are once again expected to ignore the credentials of former captain Sourav Ganguly, Venkatasai Laxman and Anil Kumble.
The charge of the young brigade, led by Yuvraj Singh, in the middle order has left very little chance for Ganguly and Laxman to be recalled to the team which is to engage West Indies in the five-match series scheduled from May 18 to 28.
While Laxman and Kumble are expected to be picked for the four-Test series to follow from June 1, Ganguly's chances look bleak even for the longer version of the game for which the team would be chosen later.
Sachin recuperating from shoulder surgery
Sachin Tendulkar, recuperating from his shoulder surgery, has already been ruled out of the one-day squad and is racing against time to be fit for the Test rubber.
Opener Wasim Jaffer, who underwent shin surgery here last week, is hopeful of being fit for the Test rubber.
The squad is scheduled to leave on May 12. India's last visit to the Caribbean islands was in 2001-02.
